Community development
Vedúci projektu a ľudia, s ktorými pracuje, to musia zvládnuť.
Humana People to People India zavádza projekty Community Development, ktoré sú integrovanou metódou rozvoja vyjadrenou v 10 líniách aktivít – pokrývajú všetky aspekty života, a teda posilňujú komunitu.
Zároveň si projekty zachovávajú svoj jasný profil s 10 líniami aktivít a základnými metódami programu.
Humana People to People India zavádza 16 projektov komunitného rozvoja v piatich štátoch Indie: Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu a Uttarakhand.

India - Community Development
aims to encourage sharing and togetherness and to create structures that give genuine participation and involvement
The issue at hand
Poverty in India is a major issue. Rural Indians depend on unpredictable agriculture incomes, while urban Indians rely on jobs that are usually scarce. More than one third of India’s fast-growing population of more than one billion still lives below the poverty line, with large parts of the entire rural and urban population living their lives in poor and dehumanizing circumstances.
Humana People to People India’s Community Development Projects are about fighting with some of these poor people, developing the skills, knowledge and experience of people as individuals and in groups, thus enabling them to undertake initiatives of their own to combat social, economic, political and environmental problems in their communities, and enabling them to fully participate in a truly democratic process.
To support the idea of the project, Community Development Projects are implementing their activities under 10 lines, covering most aspects of life and thus intended to strengthen the community on the whole.
The ten lines are:
Strengthening the Economy of the Family
Health
Early Childhood Development
Children and Youth as Active in Society
People in Difficult Circumstances
Education
Water & Sanitation
Environment
Two locally defined lines
Our Community Development Projects establish local groups such as Self Help Groups, Adolescent Boys’ and Girls’ Groups, Women’s Groups, Farmers’ Clubs, Kids’ Clubs and Village Action Groups, and they work in extensive cooperation with local groups and organizations such as Panchayati Raj Institutions and School Development Committees.
As a result of this local cooperation and the various types of community-based groups, HPPI has been successful in creating an active involvement of people in the issues that affect their lives. It is a process based on the sharing of power, skills, knowledge and experiences and offers a practice that is part of a process of social change.
Community Development Projects support the establishment of strong communities that control and use assets to promote social justice and help improve the quality of community life. It also enables community and public agencies to work together to improve the quality of government functioning.
Activities
Humana People to People India is implementing 17 Community Development Projects in eight states of India: Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.
The strengthening of the family economy is mainly taking place through the Women’s Self Help Groups and the Farmers’ Clubs. They mobilize common saving and interloaning, and the groups are linked with banks to access loan as capital to start income generating activities. The Self Help Group members have started different enterprises, including dairy, sewing and tailoring, embroidery, small shops, beauty parlors, gem cutting, pickle making, etc, earning up to Rs. 4000 per month. Many of the Farmers’ Clubs have saved substantial amounts up to Rs. 3 lakhs.
Health is another line of the activities, which is supporting the grass-root level health functionaries in Health Days and National Immunization Days, creating awareness about reproductive and sexual health among adolescents and eligible women and preventive health care in general. The projects are organizing health check-up camps, health clinics and mobile clinics to benefit the most needy and least served areas. Under NRHM (National Rural Health Mission) HPPI has trained 881 Village Health & Sanitation Committees in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
Children and Youth are playing an active role in society through their activities in Youth Clubs, Adolescents’ and Children’s Clubs. The youth groups have four lines of actions called “We Do More”, “Know your Rights”, “Learn More” and “Do Good and “Develop your Personality”. The clubs participate in organizing the villagers for cleaning actions, HIV/AIDS awareness camps, tree planting actions, village fairs, organization of sports tournaments and cultural events. In some of the projects the youths have been active in vocational trainings in use of computers, repair of mobile phones and electrical and mechanical engineering. The Adolescent Girls’ Groups discuss important issues at their present stage of life, and the Children’s Clubs have activities to give children a chance to become active players in the society as well.
To assist people in difficult circumstances, the rural CDP projects ensure that the community-based organizations take initiatives regarding e.g. old people getting pensions or handicapped children getting access to education.
In the urban CDP project in Delhi we have reached out to homeless people in East and Northeast Delhi, assisting thousands of homeless sleeping in the streets at night. More than half of them are people who have work, but cannot afford to pay for accommodation. The project assist the homeless to get an Identity Card, enable them to access various government rights and to open bank accounts. Two temporary night shelters for 120 people were run for seven months, where homeless people were in charge of the daily activities. During winter we have night rescue teams, and some of the homeless are sent to local clinics and hospitals.
In the CDP projects the environmental work has mostly concentrated on teaching children and adults about the reasons for Global Warming and Climate Changes and what can be done locally to mitigate the effects. This has taken place as lessons in the schools, cultural programs and street theatres and in tree planting actions. In a programme “Lighting a Billion Lives”, the project in UP has installed 100 solar charging stations with 6,000 lanterns in 100 villages. The solar illumination has brought a sea change in people’s lives. During the present quarter, the students preparing for their board examinations were the main beneficiaries, followed by the farmers who could irrigate and guard their fields from animals at night. The vegetable growers managed to clean and pack their products at night to sell early in the morning at the wholesale market, and households and small shops had the benefit as well.
In the villages of the CDP Projects, a Village Action Group is formed and trained. The Action Group consists of representatives from each of the other community-based groups working in the village, plus a few other persons representing concerned citizens. Typically, the Action Group makes plans for the development of the village and how to find ways to have them realized.
Although the law provides 50% reservation for women to be elected as Panchayat members, it is often found that female PRI (Panchayati Raj Institute) members act as rubber stamps, while the work is done by their husbands, fathers or brothers. To counter this situation, the CDP projects have organized workshops and trainings where the female PRI members are informed about the work they have been elected to do, and this has changed the behaviour of many of the elected women.
Mozambique - Renewable Energy Sources
Biogas Cabo Delgado
A partnership with EEP (Environmental and Energy Programs) funded by MFA Finland, is funding the construction of 5 bio digesters. These bio digesters aim to provide biogas to the kitchen at DNS Cabo Delgado and residential homes, and at Bilibiza Health Center and Maternity. The expected impact of the bio digester system project outputs and results is the reduction of the time spent collecting firewood for cooking purposes. This system will also improve the environment on a long-term basis as it will reduce the impact of deforestation and the amount of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases. Furthermore, there will be a reduction in the contamination of soil and water, there will be a reuse of wastewater, self-sufficiency in energy, better sanitary conditions for animals and workers, the reduction of odors, vectors and pathogens, generation of revenue and jobs, carbon credits and the economy and sale of electricity are other positive factors. This project is contributing to the self sustainability of the ADPP projects in Bilibiza, the Teacher Training College, the Farmers’ Club project and the Biofuel Centre, as well as the local population who is benefiting from the bio digester constructed at the clinic.
Entrepreneurial Solar Energy Project in Quissanga, Cabo Delgado Province
The provision of alternative sustainable energy and the empowerment of small entrepreneurs constitute the main idea behind this project “Enabling 18.000 people to access sustainable small scale solar power in Quissanga and Ancuabe districts in Cabo Delgado”. The project is implemented in partnership with the European Union.
The idea is being realized through the training of the local population and installation of 40 solar charging stations. The project is providing clean energy to the local population who do not have access to the national power grid. By using rechargeable lanterns through photovoltaic panels they are able to access solar energy. The lamps are also being used to mobilize for developing other activities in the community such as adults’ literacy groups in the evenings, light to do home work and receive tutoring lessons as well as providing power for small commercial businesses. The lamps have proved to be much healthier than paraffin/Kerosene lamps that have been linked to respiratory diseases through smoke inhalation.
This project’s receptiveness continues to be positive; the demand for the solar lamps and mobile phone charging system is increasing. There are many villages that are requesting for the project to be extend to their areas, as well as it was necessary to remove few solar charging stations from one village to another, in order to ensure that this increasing demand is answered.
Entrepreneurial Solar Energy Project in Changalane, Maputo Province
The project aims to train 2,400 people (approx. 400 families) on how to obtain solar energy from sustainable small-scale energy power stations in Changalane. This project aims to provide an innovative energy solution to rural communities in Mozambique. The project is funded by the Governments of Finland and Austria and hosted by the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
The installation of solar energy systems has enabled the rural families to have access to better education, the possibility to take part in income generating activities and to develop local businesses. At least 800 children will be able to study after dusk, which will improve their performance at school. 50 local business people will receive training on how to use the new technology to develop their businesses, 200 community leaders and members will be given capacity training on how to use the new technology to improve their economy and general living standards.
The Bilibiza Bio Fuel Center
The partnership between ADPP Mozambique, FACT (Fuels from Agriculture and Communal Technology) and the Ministry of Agriculture, is successfully providing an alternative to the high prices of fuel. This is a community based project in which farmers from 36 communities in Cabo Delgado have been mobilized to cultivate jatropha to produce bio fuel for local consumption. The jatropha is planted as hedges around the fields.
The pure vegetable oil obtained from the seeds of jatropha is used for modified diesel engines, for soap productions and for domestic illumination. The bio fuel is used for internal combustion engines.
